Pampered Pregnant Pigs

If you’re a pig breeder and plan on moving to Florida, which is strange enough, make sure you bring big cages. The reason to do so is that, animal cruelty being an important issue to Florida citizens, it is illegal to house a pregnant pig in an enclosure that prevents them from turning around freely. Doing so is considered “cruel and inhumane confinement.”
The purpose of the law is not weird in and of itself, but rather what is strange about the law is that it only refers to pregnant pigs. Shouldn’t other farm animals, pregnant or not, get the same right? What is it about pigs that makes them so special? Obviously nothing once they’re done with the pregnancy because then the law doesn’t apply to them anymore.
Actually, I can’t think of a scenario where I’ve seen a cage so small that the animal couldn’t turn around in so I wonder if this has ever even been a problem. It’s not as if it’s a huge problem to make cages that are a couple feet bigger. Crazy Florida people. Photo by aarontberg
