Missouri Says “Not On Our Toast!”
In Missouri, the law is quite clear – you can have yellow butter or white margarine, but yellow margarine is just not welcome. Today the idea seems quite insane, but when the law was originally created, around 1895, it was actually pretty common. Missouri law makers were trying to protect the products of state dairy farmers from a cheap competitor tweaked to look more appealing. Paris, France had a similar law. Except that while the rest of the world repealed the law, Missouri kept it on the books.
However, my sources inside Missouri say that the law is largely flaunted with spreads like Country Crock being readily available.
